Red Cross Disaster Relief Funds Depleted

Many news outlets are reporting today that the American Red Cross Disaster Relief fund is out of money, and that they’re in particular need because of flooding in the mid-west.

The good news is, you can donate right here- plus, many employers will match gifts made to non profits (West does this, contact me or check out thePoint if you want to know how).

Pensive Insomnia

I can’t get to sleep again- I almost wrote a rant about Christian Evangelicals and Liberal Christians, but decided not to.  You’re welcome.

I love the smell of `kill -9` in the morning; Smells like… Victory

You Should Watch This

I usually don’t post about politics, but everyone should really watch this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eBGIQ7ZuuiU

Stop the Madness

I get a large coffee from Starbucks most mornings and drink it for the rest of the day (even when it’s cold by afternoon).  Is that gross? Does that make me an addict? :)

Awesome Bad Movies

I get criticized a lot for my taste in movies; one of my favorite movies is Hackers; I’ve seen it dozens of times and I’m still not sick of it. I readily admit that it not a good movie by most (any?) standards, and it is very inaccurate as far as computing goes (Either use actual computing terms relevantly or don’t bother at all, okay?). But I love it all the same. One quality it has that is often overlooked is the way they portray navigating a file structure; it’s very difficult to make something so dull interesting, and flying through a digital cityscape was a decent way of handling that.

To me, there’s a two dimensional scale on which movies fall with quality on one axis and entertainment on the other. I’ve seen a lot of high quality movies that are extremely boring, and a lot of low quality movies that are extremely entertaining. The trick is getting one that scores well on both axes. I guess those on the low quality end of things are like little guilty pleasures; anyone want to confess to any bad movies that they love (I happen to know that a certain reader entered the Computer Science field because of The Net :) …)

How did we win the Cold War?

How did we win the Cold War if the Russians had BEARS THAT CAN PLAY HOCKEY?!  Youtube video attached; thanks Ryan!  (This might be Ukrainian or some other country that uses a Cyrillic character set; but I’ll continue to be an ignorant American and just say it’s Russian- I can do that because we won the Cold War ;-) )

Carlotta Valdez

One of my all time favorite movies is Vertigo starring Jimmy Stewart and Kim Novak. It was an Alfred Hitchcock film from 1958; I won’t go into the plot because it’s difficult to explain without giving it away. But the film was very interesting, and had a great visual feel and score.

Anyway, one of my college roommates introduced me to the song Carlotta Valdez by Harvey Danger which is about the film; I’ve been looking for it a while and saw it pop up on imeem.com today; so listen to it- and if you don’t get it, then watch the film and listen again :)

Countdown to Wii Launch

Ok, so I cheated a little bit :)   Calin let me open the wii and hook it up early, but I’m not going to play until April 1st, so it’s just a few hours away!  We’ll see if I stay up that late.

Hopefully we won’t be disappointed- all of the suspense has both of us pretty excited about playing, so I hope the novelty doesn’t wear off quickly.

Eliot Spitzer resigns as governor of New York; where will we find comfort during this difficult time?
